The one development you never hear about — because it is unattainable — is automated software development. Developers cost so much money, it’s a wonder that every organization of any substantial size isn’t hard at work trying to create a non-human Software developer.
No, instead there are some that are busy enabling mass automation of un-insightful, shallow, limited vocabulary news blasts and stories written in blog-style non-nuanced flatus vocis that ignore all of history and the greater semantic matrix of human reality. The kind of writing that is suited only for the toilet and train station waiting-rooms — under 3 minute reading time!
The hard problem of AI writing is that science doesn’t know what creativity is — Perhaps because that’s studied in the “sad” Humanities departments, not in the bright towers of STEM work! And it’s very hard to automate what you don’t understand.
I mention that last point because that is where the true danger lies. Rather than automating human creativity, our universities (organized criminal organizations all, according to Noam Chomsky) are busily recreating retrograde human drones in whom whatever once was the source of creativity has been adequately euthanized.
It’s why the Humanities have been deprecated in favor of the STEM oligarchs’ (Simmons & Mercer at Stony Brook University, for example) pet projects to redesign humanity.
Which is to say, someone can only claim that an automated text writing system is producing creative writing in the absence of any understanding of what creative writing entails, and more importantly, what it brings to a fully functional reader.
Whatever “new age” arrives, it will — in the end — just be another case of royal nuditity finally recognized.
