In a real way, governments are powerless to do anything other than engage in huge, important scientific projects that will accomplish nothing in time. Because they cannot control human behavior, though many have tried, and the structural limitations on what office holders can do assures the status quo, they’ll just keep doing what they have been doing — placating those that are concerned, while reassuring those that don’t give a shit that it won’t cost them a cent.

But we individuals can change things because our only limitations are self-imposed to a very large degree, and thus can be removed by each of us on our own. Personally, I’m tired of hearing people telling others what they must do, but it’s too late to be tired of hearing these things — it’s time, now, to focus our attention on what needs to be done by all of us.

And here’s the test to see if we will thrive, just survive, or self-euthanize: will we — individually — immediately today reduce our consumption of meat, as the new report indicates we must do? It’s the largest cause of global warming that is under the control of each of us to change.
