Hello Jules, it's nice to encounter your writing. I am now a fully-paid member of SMN because of this article, and looking forward to getting involved with the discussions there.

The problem that you bring up in the quoted lines, is that it doesn't matter how many people 'hold' non-materialist theories. It only matters that the world -- all of us -- live our lives through the materialist paradigm.

It's not a theory we hold in general. I daresay most people have complaints about its effects, even if they are not philosophers who pay attention to the source of their complaints. A theory is conceptual. How I or you get treated upon entering a hospital is entirely configured by the materialist paradigm. Even discussing consciousness as if it had some relevance to anything at all in academia is suicidal -- in the sciences.

The problem is that it is extremely difficult to change one's paradigm, because you cannot do it from within your old paradigm. This is not something easy or convenient to do. The one solution is through a profound meditation practice, using advanced techniques -- i.e. not secular mindfulness meditation -- and certainly not 'guided meditations' which are relaxing at best. But even with great success in your practice, you will still be treated allopathically once you enter a hospital. And everything will still 'work' according to the "generally accepted theory of what's happening" -- that is, the current paradigm.

I'll leave at that. It's a complex subject that I have written a great about, and not just to show the problem, but to provide solutions.
