Although I have never encountered Jacob Needleman’s writing, your description of him, his work, and his disappointment at not being more widely heard within academia resonates for me. It does take an extraordinary effort to go against the tide in one’s chosen (or assigned 😊) field of knowledge, where colleagues can seem more like stalagmites, than open-minded lovers of truth.
